Nothing special, lacks originality September 23, 2008 Glamour Girl (UK) Perhaps over the past 8 years this hasn't aged well. Maybe back then it was original, but now... well, it just felt like a standard police procedural, and reminded me a lot of Tess Gerritsen's The Surgeon (which was a lot better!) Also, if you want a scarey read, look somewhere else. As a young female, reading this alone at night when my boyfriend was away on business, I had no problem switching out the lights and going straight to sleep!
Disturbing, horrific but un-put-downable! September 21, 2008 Jack Baxi (Leeds) I read this book in a day. Couldnt put it down - read it in the car, on my break, in the evening. The story is fast paced, breath-takingly good and unrelenting. The best thing about the book is it doenst spend endless pages on descriptive nonsense which bogs down a lot of thrillers. Mo is always moving the story forward with some very credible characters. However - the last third is truly horrifying. Too much violence and terror for my liking and although i am an avid crime reader, i did feel my stomach turning towards the end. In fact after finishing the book, i wondered whether i would buy another, simply b/c i did find the details over the top - some things you should leave to the imagination! The details of the rapes / murders veered into the uncomfortable. Having said that, the pace and twists are extraordinary; it is impossible to predict. All in all one of the best thrillers ive read (and one of the few to to finish in one day) but i have not give 5 stars only due to the fact that it leaves nothing to the imagination and did leave a slightly sour taste in the mouth. Probably will read another Mo Hayder, but i hope its a little toned down. With some amazing story telling skills, that level of violence surely isnt needed!
Disturbingly Decent September 10, 2008 Sam (Reading, Berkshire) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Serial killers come in all shapes and sizes, but overall there is a pattern that most follow. Jack Caffery is a detective working on a team trying to uncover the killer of five women whose corpses have been found. He believes in a profiling technique and suggests that the killer must be educated in medical techniques in some way. This does not go down too well with all the squad as others want to look at the easier option of a local man who happens to look suspicious. Caffery will need to work on his own ideas parallel to the general consensus. Whoever is right they need to find the killer quick as they are speeding up and are deranged - why else would they leave a dead bird in each corpse? `Birdman' is a very well written novel that is extremely dark and disturbing. The first 30 pages in particular do not hold back in describing in minute detail the bodies of five women. For some this is an instant turn off and I cannot blame them as I too almost stopped. However, rather than just being over sensational for its own sake Mo Hayder uses this initial extreme section to get you hooked - and it works. The pace of the story is excellent with some very good twists and turns. If you can stomach the over indulgence in the macabre you will find an excellent mystery hidden underneath.

This book piles on the gore and grue but only manages to induce boredom and irritation. Why? Well, the author's characterisation is one-dimensional at best. None of them come to life and worst of all is the total lack of empathy shown to the killer's victims. They are just objects to be degraded and abused and no-one in this book shows any feeling towards them other than as objects. I found the author's inability to show empathy for the murder victims more revolting than the parade of torture and mutilation. The majority of the victims are prostitutes, the ONLY victim to be given any kind of personality is not a prostitute but a middle class suburban woman. Not recommended. Badly written, bad attitude. The author should concentrate on writing decent characters, not just writing gory murders.

I couldnt wait to start this book. After hearing it to be compared to my favourite author, Karin Slaughter, but even more gruesome I thought it was too good to be true. I heard so many amazing reviews for this that I set my sights pretty high and was therefor a bit disappointed. It is a good book with good pace but I found it a bit slow at the begining and took a while to get into. Also alot of reviewers here on amazon said it was really graphic and gruesome but I didnt find this to be the case, there are some grizly bits but nothing that stood out to me as significantly horrific. And I feel this is slightly where I felt let down. I was hoping for some sickening details that really shocked me and unfortunately that wasnt the case. Also I felt the lead characters had great personality and back stories but the secondary characters where a bit 1 sided. There wasnt really alot goin on with them and there were alot of secondary characters which made it hard to keep track of who was who. I'd say this book is a good read but I expected, and wanted, more from it. So don't get your hopes up to much but its worth a look if your a fan of the genre.
