3 out of 5 stars It is the weakest season, period   August 28, 2008

So far it is the weakest season of Scrubs, I personally maintain that Scrubs was at it's funniest season 2 and season 5 probably with 4 shortly after. But here the writing got sloppy and the actors do begin to try to compensate, it doesn't work. Again though, as many others say there are enough funny moments to make this a worthwhile purchase, and I'm a huge Scrubs fan so will probbaly never stop watching it. On the bright side, Season 7 (as short as it was through the writers strike) is much much better, which gives me hope for Season 8, (not sure about 9, would the show be the same with the actors playing J.D. and Carla leaving?)

2 out of 5 stars Drop-off.   July 7, 2008

Unlike in Britain, where sitcoms tend to have shorter series and quit while they're ahead, American comedies are bled dry by the networks and finish long after they should have. Scrubs, one of the funniest and most original shows on television for its first three or four seasons, had a considerable drop-off in quality by its fifth season. As so often happens, characters became exaggerated versions of themselves and everything starts to feel familiar.

As such, season six is the sixth best season of Scrubs. Many of the problems from the fifth season remain - Dr. Kelso, previously just an out-of-touch, but loveable chauvinist, is still a sexual deviant in an unfunny way. As with Family Guy, many background or one-off jokes which were funny the first few times like the security guard with a hook hand are worn out. The biggest problem of all is Zach Braff's JD, who as well as not being nearly as funny as he was in the first few seasons is now scarcely likeable. The mistakes he makes are blindingly obvious, the morals of the stories can be spotted from the end of the first act, and several characters seem to be working a tad too hard for their jokes to be funny. There are also a number of sloppy in-jokes, references to other sitcoms and worst of all, a clip show which even by clip show standards is abysmal.

Storyline wise, it's a mixed bag - aside from the aforementioned 'painfully obvious morals' trend, the serious emotional storyline around episode 19 is well handled and fitting (although they cop out by the next season). The 'everybody's pregnant!' ending of the previous season which continues here seemed like the work of a hack in the first place, while the ending of the last episode is utterly hopeless, and again, easy to see coming.

However, the season is far from irredeemable. Neil Flynn's Janitor is still very, very funny and stays within the bounds of his character. John C. McGinley's Dr. Cox, while unnecessarily vindictive at times even by his standards, is still very funny, as is Chris Turk. Better yet, Keith Dudemeister, an interesting new character from season 5 continues to be rounded out across season six, fitting in with the show's surreal nature as well as remaining appealingly down to earth at the same time.

What's more, there is one reason above all others to buy this DVD, and that is 'My Musical,' the entirely musical episode of the show. Brilliantly directed, choreographed, written and sung, as well as being the funniest episode of the previous two seasons, it would be enough to make this DVD box set worth buying on its own.

As far as special features, the monotonous, predominantly one-person audio commentaries aren't much worth listening to (aside from Neil Flynn's absurdist humour), but extensive 'making-of' features on the My Musical episode, an interview with Judy Reyes (Carla Turk) and a feature on the background characters like Colonel Doctor are all worth watching at least once. So, while this is by far not the best season of Scrubs, it's still well worth a buy for its quality moments.

2 out of 5 stars Never seen a quality drop-off like it   April 21, 2008

Massive Scrubs fan here. Seasons 1-3, lifechangingly awesome, Season 4 funny but more deliberately "whackier", more cutaways etc, and by Season 5 the show had become sillier and patchier, but with enough funny writing and good episodes to get away with it. Then Season 6...

So bad I almost gave it one star. Only a few episodes (My Musical, Their Story) saved it. The one-liners and snappy interplay are gone, and a lotta the actors look bored. The whole show just ground to a halt and stopped being funny. Clearly affected by doubts over its future, there is little here to suggest anyone involved is switched on further than autopilot. Season 7 is much funnier so far, shaping up to be a return to Season 5 form, and I'm really happy about that because I will always be a fan of the show and these characters. However, I would not feel good about spending money on this particular series.

In summary- every other season is good to great. This season is very poor.

5 out of 5 stars is there a doctor in the house...?   March 19, 2008

i accidently discovered 'scrubs' while i was home with the flu.....coincidence? i could not find the remote and it had just started and was too ill to get up. well, here in the n.y.c area it airs in both first run and syndication, the syndication channel airs two episodes at 7:00 p.m.. i was hooked, i immediatley related to J.D.'s character...as i can screw up anything with flashes of genius. it is hard to pinpoint the real appeal of this jem. a casual viewer might dismiss the show as sophomoric medical fluff with a bit of randy behavior, but the interaction of all the players is just right. sure there is sacrcasm and teasing, but under that layer is genuine affection. we all know that dr. cox is really the mentor we all secretly want to have on our side. however, for me the, the J.D. soliliquy observations on life are what leaves me hard hit and thinking...about life, love, friendship, death, romantic relationships and career. when the show ends, i really hope that J.D. and Elliot wind up together, they belong in each others arms...love based on friendship with friendship based on love..just give this show some time and you won't miss an episode..IMO, one of the most underrated and under awarded usa sitcoms
