3 out of 5 stars Well acted grimy urban drama ...but whats the point?   March 25, 2008

It's often clear what a film director is trying to achieve with any given film Sometimes they are make societal or political points, sometimes the film is allegorical, sometimes it's just a piece of entertainment. Sometimes with a director like David Lynch you know that there is subtext behind what you see on the screen but you really haven't a clue what it is and if you think you have you are probably wrong. The thing is that having watched Sugarhouse i have absolutely no idea what director Gary Love or screen writer Dominic Leyton was trying to achieve.
The plot , such as it is has middle class Tom (Andrew Mackintosh) heading into a deprived estate somewhere in London to buy a gun off crack head D (Ashley Walters) . This on the surface simple transaction is complicated by the fact that D thinks Tom is a soft touch and deserves to be fleeced and intimidated. More worryingly local nut job and drug dealer Hoodwink (Andy Serkis) ,an expectant father who has to use Buddhist chants to calm his omnipresent rage knows that D swiped the gun from behind the bath panel when round collecting his stash the day before. Hoodwink therefore is on the rampage and wants his blood .
The main premise of the narrative seems to be exploring the relationship between D and Tom , as they gradually learn more about each other and by proxy so does the audience. There is also a revelation regarding Hoodwink and D that dictates the films conclusion. While watching the film i thought the whole premise seemed rather stagey and it transpires that the film is adapted from a stage play called "Collision" written by Dominic Leyton so it's a little unfair to blame director Love for any fugue surrounding the films aims.
Sugarhouse is lifted by good performances with Andy Serkis especially good as the volcanic Hoodwink and it has a convincing urban squalor but anyone who dislikes their drama littered with graphic violence and rapid fire profanity will find Sugarhouse repellent. I took the films final message to be that nothing is ever what it seems but by communicating we can learn about each other and just maybe influence their life's for the better. I am just not convinced that using an unstable crack head and a completely unhinged thug is the best way to go about it in order to get the audience on your side.

4 out of 5 stars Journey to another side of London   January 16, 2008

This is UK indie cinema on very good form.

Very high quality acting and a 'more angst than action' plot (and direction) that twists and turns. Surprisingly deep on many levels and with a very well-crafted soundtrack.

'Sugarhouse' is an immersive and emotional entertainment experience: albeit not a side of London I'd want to experience for real, but then this is a chance to safely get up close to those people and situations you'd normally discreetly cross the road to avoid.

5 out of 5 stars Top film   December 21, 2007

This is a proper movie that keeps your heart pumping and ensures that you are fully engaged into a total movie experience. Superbly directed and the acting is spot on. I can't believe it didn't get better reviews when it first came out. This will probably be one of those films that gets it's own cult following in the years ahead.

3 out of 5 stars Strange   October 11, 2007

Strange film, quite surreal at first, you notice the interaction between people is just incongruent and seems quite unrealistic... then halfway through the film you realise its a twisted kind of comedy with a very subtle humour... I did enjoy the film; its certainly very unique and original. If I were to reveal the plot I would ruin the film so just watch it.
