Amazon.co.uk Review If it weren't for the fact that John Boorman's Point Blank was already a definitive take on Richard Stark's novel The Hunter (reissued under the title Payback), Payback would be a well-above-average 90s action movie. The original toughness is diluted: Mel Gibson's Porter, replacing Lee Marvin's Walker and Stark's Parker, comes on like a hardnut but turns into a softie when he hooks up with call-girl Maria Bello (and he even likes dogs). Double-crossed and wounded after shifty Gregg Henry dupes Porter's wife (Deborah Kara Unger) into betraying him, Porter sets out to get back the $70,000 share of a heist that he feels he is owed. Because Henry has used the money to buy his way into "the Outfit", he has to deal not only with the squirming scumbag but a hierarchy of corporate mobsters (William Devane, James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson) for whom it would be bad business practice to hand over even the trivial sum. Director-writer Brian Helgeland gives it a steely-blue look and gets good performances all round (with room for Lucy Liu as an amusing dominatrix) while constructing a story in which everything fits. But it's just a good thriller, since the masterpiece potential has already been staked out. --Kim Newman

HAS ITS MOMENTS... November 26, 2008 Lou Almighty ...but comedy and revenge don't go together. Remakes rarely live up to the original and PAYBACK (the original being POINT BLANK with Lee Marvin) is no exception, and it's not for the lack of trying. The acting is good, the story is good, but it's the directing and the sometimes slapstick humor that bring PAYBACK down. There's plenty of other GOOD revenge films out there, this one looks poor by comparison. 3 stars for effort and because it IS watchable.

If You Like Revenge Movies, Get This. I love the film 'MAN ON FIRE', But This Delivers a Twisted Blend Of Comedy and Action, Great Stuff. Written And Directed By Brian Helgeland (L.A Confidential).
Payback for your money June 11, 2007 Jay (Mauritius) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Payback" is one of those highly entertaining movies that make you forget your sorrows for a moment and entertains you right till the end. Difference with most other entertaining movies is that this movie also has a great story! The movie is completely driven by the main character played by Mel Gibson. He plays a great and fun criminal who is an anti-hero and a total bad guy but still someone for who you can feel and cheer about. The movie also features lot's of other great actors including James Coburn in a very fun role, Kris Kristofferson, Lucy Liu, Bill Duke and David Paymer. The movie is filled with great and entertaining characters. The story is just great and has quite some nice twists and moments. The movie is comedy like but it also has a wonderful film-noir feeling with a typical atmosphere. There are also some nice action sequences in which Mel Gibson's character might be featured a bit too much as an hero.
See the director's cut May 6, 2007 TJ Ramsbottom (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I, along with most other people, enjoyed the theatrical version released in 1999. But what most people won't know is that the entire third act was reshot because the original version was considered too dark. The studio wanted more Lethal Weapon style action and comedy. Helgeland's released a new director's cut (Payback: Straight Up) on region 1 DVD that reinstates all the darker moments (the dog dies, the voice-over has been deleted) and the train station ending. Personally I like both versions but ultimately the new version is the one intended to have been seen and I urge you to check it out.
get ready to root for the bad guy October 25, 2006 sean paul mccann (ireland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Payback is 1999 movie starring mel gibson as porter who isnt your usual good guy,in fact he is a nasty piece of work called porter who was double crossed by an old crime partner for his share of $140,000 and left for dead. From surviving and rebuilding himself through robbing a credit card and getting back his pride so to speak, then porter is ready to face his demons face on and there is are corrupt cops on his tale as well as well as bosses who see porter as a threat. The film is a revenge movie but is supremely cool and you will cheer gibson on who excels in the evil man with a heart role, with excellent support from lucy liu, gregg henry, kris kristofferson and james coburn this is a movie of brilliance.
