I'm a sci-fi comedy geek. But... October 5, 2008 Moonbeam24 (London, England) I love Sci-fi comedy. I love Nick Frost. In fact, I love most of the cast in Hyperdrive when they've done other projects. They are clearly talented comic actors. Unfortunately, Hyperdrive is not as entertaining as other comedy shows and more importantly other sci-fi comedy shows (yes, I mean Red Dwarf). I tried to watch this with an open mind, but it was difficult not to compare it to Red Dwarf and Hitchikers. They both set the mark for Sci-fi comedy, as Star Trek and Star Wars set the mark for Sci-Fi. I laughed at the jokes in Hyperdrive, I watched the repeats, I even bought the DVD, but you can't escape the feeling that it's trying to do something Red Dwarf and Hitchikers did a lot better a long time before! If you're a geek like me, you'll like it, you'll laugh, you may even love it in some strange way, but you'll always remember where you've seen most of it before. It will always be in the shadow of Red Dwarf and Hitchikers, it's unavoidable when you're in Sci-Fi comedy territory.
this is awful September 11, 2008 S. Mason I never caught this on tv but i have enjoyed many shows which have featured nick frost and kevin eldon but not this one . i endured the first disc thinking it must pick up soon but it didnt and i cant even bring myself to watch the 2nd series . its a shame because i love nick frost but this is just plain bad
Wonderful! August 7, 2008 Billy (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I couldn't agree more with Max (review #2). I adore Red Dwarf and although comparisons are inevitable, Hyperdrive has a much classier feel and is far easier on the eye. In fact, so good does Hyperdrive look, it's only the comedic element that tells you this isn't a serious stab at a British sci-fi show... the make up used for the various 'aliens' encountered by the crew really is top-notch. The cast also excell, particularly Nick Frost, who's delivery style tickles me no-end. Take of your Red Dwarf blinkers and give this a go. You'll love it!
stop with the comparing thing August 6, 2008 K. Box (Worcester,England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Why does everyone feel they have to compare one space based thing with another? Why compare this with Red Dwarf? Yes, both are spacey based things - but let's face it, there the similarity really ends. Red Dwarf started well but by the end of the series it got pretty dreadful.Anyway, Hyperdrive takes a bit of getting into initially, but once the characters have established themselves the plots become secondary, and the series becomes a vehicle for the characters and their many foibles and peccadiloes to be exploited in all sorts of ways. Isn't this partly what comedy is about, whether it's up in space or on terra firma? As for knowing what'll happen next, or how they'll respond to situations they find themselves in - isn't that precisely what endears us to the older comic characters? Don't tell me you didn't know what would happen to Rodney and Del Boy in each programme? I think the 3 main characters in Hyperdrive are well created and substantial comic presences. I agree, it's not the best comedy series on t.v., and it does have its weaknesses here and there, but overall it's way better then most t.v. comedies. Give it time - don't compare.com too much
Clever and funny July 7, 2008 Skylark (Bristol) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I disagree with the negative reviews posted here but each to his own I guess. I thoroughly enjoyed Hyperdrive and loved the characters and excellent casting. Why do some people have to pick at everything and compare with this and that? Take it for what it is, clever, funny British humour at it's best!
