TomTom One XL with Western Europe Map, NOT UK & ROI September 23, 2008 J. Kearney (Spain & Ireland) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this product in Spain, driving back to Ireland through France. The quality of the map in Spain and France is very good. I had several customer meetings both in Madrid and Paris suburbs and the device got me there every time in the time scale predicted. The traffic camera alerts were useful and accurate. Once I got back to Ireland, I found the device to be pretty good, but not as accurate detail as in Continental Europe. There are no traffic camera alerts as far as I can tell. I was looking to plan a trip to Northern Ireland and there are some details lacking on the map, since I could not find the place names. This is, I think, the difference between getting the UK & ROI map and the Western Europe Map. If you're looking for such detail in both regions, you should invest in both maps to install on your device. I liked the Tom Tom Home software which gives you the ability to update the map details and also to personalise the device, e.g. put a security code on it. I have already replaced the arrow icon with an image of my car. I also found an excellent freeware software "Tyre", that allows you to plan trips using Google Maps and then download them into the device.
Tom Tom has no sense of direction September 22, 2008 Somerset Sue (North Somerset, UK) 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
I wanted TomTom believing it was the market leader. I was bought the XL 22 Europe as a gift earlier this month. We used it the first day to find it had a dislike of any A roads, motorways or anything wider than a 1-track lane with passing places. If we then put ourselves back on the main road, it told us to turn off again. We even went up someone's drive (no other roads nearby) - granted it wasn't apparent it was a drive, at first. When it took us 3 sides of a square to bring us back on the same road we'd left we knew it had a worse sense of direction than I. Back to the shop. Day 2: they said there wasn't anything wrong but changed the settings for us (to use the same we'd been using anyway) and we embarked on another adventure. A 45 minute drive took 2.5 hours and this was supposed to be the fastest route. It may have been had there not been cows, cars and flooding to contend with on the chosen roads. We turned it off and came home using a more reliable map. Back to the shop. They ordered a replacement which came yesterday. I turned it on today to have a loud whistling noise and no GPS signal. I live in an open area, no tall buildings and it took 10 minutes to find a satelite, yet the first one didn't have either of these problems. Today we have a refund and will but something that is not Tom Tom. Unless you like great adventures and travelling literally as the crow flies, fields and all, I wouldn't recommend.
Poor after service and support from Amazon September 19, 2008 Mal Ady (Derby UK) 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Bought my tom tom One XL a year ago, after a week it went faulty. returned it twice, each time the manufacturer returned it (after several weeks) unrepaired with excuses. The after service was terrible. It is still not working. Even though I bought it through Amazon, they (amazon)did not want to know or offer me any support.
Good enough as a driving aid (Still need a brain) September 19, 2008 Mr. Lee Cronin (UK) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I use a TomTom all the time and it is great. I always get where I want. After reading other reviews I thought I'd write this one. When you use a TomTom you must still use your brain! If there is something in the road, you stop or avoid it. If it tells you to take a turn down a road which has a No Entry sign then obviously obey the signs! If you can't read the road and must follow your TomTom like a drone then maybe you should think about giving up driving. If you are a proficient driver and just need a helping hand to find your way then a TomTom will give you no problems.
Poor London, UK performance for TomTom OneXL V2 September 3, 2008 Nasser Batley (UK) 9 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have just had a terrible experience with this product. I was driving through London today, on my way to the hospital and the device directed me to turn left onto a road which had been turned into a pedestrian zone! A short time after, it asked me to turn "Right" from a junction with no right turn. As a result, I received a fixed penalty of 30 from the police. To top it all off, it asked me to turn "Left" on to a road which clearly had the "No Left Turn" sign on it. I am thoroughly disappointed with the performance of this product, especially for roads in Central London where I am sure data on roads is easily available. Hence, I will be promptly returning this product and advise anyone thinking of using this product in London to think carefully before purchasing.
