5 out of 5 stars Works well for a tiny phone   August 12, 2008

If you have large fingers, you will probably be better off with a larger model, it is very small, thin & doesn't have a particularly large screen! This is my 8th Ericsson/Sony Ericsson phone & am not disappointed. It is everything the previous W880i should have been - it does feel like a prototype & the keyboard is better. The screen is slightly larger, has a large viewing angle & is excellent. Mine is Vodafone branded but unlocked. The networks seem to be learning not to undo too much functionality or ruin the firmware as they have done in the past. This model can have it's firmware updated over the air - a step up over the W880i but no firmware revisions have been released by Vodafone in the last 5 months. One change on the interface that's annoying at 1st, is that the "Back" button has moved from the bottom of the lefthand cluster to the top of the righthand bunch - you'll get used to it if you've own this make before & is more logical.
The interfaces on Sony Ericsson phones are amongst the best there is out there; they are consistent between models & between differing functions. The number keys can be used to access sub-menu options & pressing then holding the r/h End Call button takes you straight to the top level (Standby) menu. Directly below this is main menu that has SE's usual 12 icons such as Camera, Messaging, Phonebook, Alarms, Organiser, Tools, Walkman player, settings, My Applications, Media, Calls etc. All pretty logical though Nokia users will complain because it is different & to my mind - better! The 4 way control's functions can be customised when in the Standby menu. No horrid little joystick on this model - so should be reliable well beyond a year. Accessing the whole menu system is very fast
The camera is better than the W880i which was bad! No autofocus like on the CyberShot range or as good as previous models such as the K750i but expecting the same performance from a phone only half the thickness is expecting too much. I have the camera set to max resolution & quality, unfortunately, there's no digital zoom at all. You have to use the minimum resolution to get that. Video mode is not that bad. The shutter sound can be set to silent on my firmware version. The RDS FM radio works well enough in urban areas & can be set to automatically change station as an option.
Messaging has all the usual functions such as email can have settings sent over the internet via SE's website to ease setup but I find the initial messing around with server names still bad enough to put most users off. I have set up 5 different accounts but only one can be accessed at a time without manually switching between them. I do find being able to read my normal email accounts & send from them extremely useful, attaching photos is simple enough.
The phonebook gets better with every new model. The W890i can have 7 different numbers per name, these include addresses, birthday & notes ringtones can be set for each name as can pictures. Voice dialling can be applied to each number. All the usual file formats can be used as ringtones, even incoming emails or texts can have different sounds associated with them. You cannot assign different tones for texts from different people though. Various phonebook entries can be assigned to Groups & named something like Friends. You can then send texts to thes groups or allow received calls from such a ground & exclude all others.
I use the browser every day. More & more web sites detect a mobile phone & size their pages accordingly. I use flickr daily & occasionally upload photos straight from my phone to my profile where I can read other users comments or reply to them. The browser can be set to full screen or landscape, however, this model does not automatically switch between the 2. This phone uses HSDPA as well as the vanilla 3G - if your subscription supports this much higher data rate, you will see a "3G+" icon instead of the normal "3G" one. The sound quality from the Walkman player is probably better than many MP3 plyers. You can swap the supplied in-ear & phones for something decent - I plug in a pair of Sennheiser ones using the microphone accessory that comes in the bundle. The Walkman player is accessed via the left side button but unlike the one for the camera, a single press will activate it - often by accident. the player will return to the last track where it was exited from & can, like the browser, be set to landscape mode. The player can be minimised but the name of each new track will scroll across the Standby menu then disappear.
My phone came with a 2GB M2 card. I've since bought a 4GB & recently an 8GB card, the phone has no difficulty in seeing the full capacity. I expect a 16GB card to work if & when they become available. One big drawback with the W890i is that the battery cover has to be removed to change cards. Fortunately, the battery doesn't have to be removed or the phone switched off. I wished I could say that this phone was perfect but it does occasionally lock up, requiring the battery be removed, it doesn't happen very often. The power can be cycled with by holding down the button on the top of the phone & if not held in, has other functions such as "Turn on Silent", "Keylock" & profile selection (Profiles are pre-named like Outdoors, Meeting, Home, Handfree etc & can have stuff like ring volume customised to them or have all calls rejected apart from those assigned to a group of contacts as mentioned earlier for example.
Several alarms can be set independently, be reoccurring & even switch the phone on. They won't switch Profiles though. I've used Bluetooth with an SE headset & USB Belkin Dongle. The bundled Windows software synchronises my copy of Outlook XP without issues, even bookmarks can be added in IE then sent to the phone. SE also bundles software that rips from CDs or MP3s etc to MP3s or AC3 & other formats, store then on your PC then send them to the phone at the desire bit rate. The software also includes full file access to both the phone's own memory or the card in various modes that will power the phone back up in "Flight" mode (switches off all RF functions, allowing the phone to play music) according to the option selected.
My phone came in black & looks classy & well made. Mine does not creak at all, unlike some earlier models. The phone's ability to make, receive & hang onto calls appears to be OK but their are probably better models for those living in rural areas. It rarely drops calls, works in most buildings & appears to switch seamlessly between 2G & 3G. Although the battery is small, its capacity is quite high, charges from flat in under 2hrs lasts me between 30hrs & 3 days - if I stop playing with it, it will last at least 3 days or longer. The display will fade in brightness then switch of automatically unless set not to but not advisable.

PLUSES:
* rarely drops calls or can't make them
* well made phone with high quality & small screen that can be seen in the sun
* does not creak!
* Very good interface that's easy to navigate
* Under 10mm thick
* very good music player
* will take 8GB M2 cards without issue
* good sound quality during calls & music playback, RDS radio
* better keypad than the W880i
* all the usual messaging options including email & T9 txt entry
* very fast data & good browser
* quad band
* email works as do functions such as Bluetooth & sync'ing contacts & appointments

NEGATIVES
* occasionally locks up requiring battery removal
* screen smaller than many would like
* buttons too close or small
* no touch screen
* average camera quality & no zoom accept on the smallest resolution
* average battery life

2 out of 5 stars Great features - poor reception   April 27, 2008

I got this phone not long after it came out. It was unlocked so I could put any sim card I wanted in it. After putting my 3 sim card in, I noticed that I couldn't get signal anywhere around my house whereas on my old phone (Nokia N73), I had full signal everywhere. At first I thought it could be because I was on 3 so I got an O2 and vodafone sim card and still had the same problems.

Looks like Sony Ericsson got all the features and the design right, they just forgot it had to make calls and send txts too.

2 out of 5 stars Reception and connection issues   April 23, 2008
M. Hardwick (london)
I upgraded to this to replace a Nokia, because it looked great and was small and light.

Unfortunately it has major connection / reception problems - it's so bad I'm surprised SE hasn't recalled the phone.

It loses connection when you walk in buildings, and when the screen powers on. I can stand in the same spot, access the menu, the screen comes on and reception starts to drop. It's so bad I thought it must be a faulty phone so I swapped if for a new one. Sadly I'm having the same problem.

Only buy this phone if you don't want to make or receive calls.

3 out of 5 stars Good Features but Poor Signal Strength   April 13, 2008
Stephen Ward (UK)
I bought this phone to replace my Nokia 6300. I never had any connection problems with the Nokia anywhere in my house but it's hit or miss whether I can connect with the W890i. Sometimes I have to dial 2 or 3 times to get through, even when the signal strength is showing 3 blue bars. Sending txt or mms has the same problem. I have to walk around the house to try and send successfully.

The build of the phone feels very cheap and plastic, especially the keys on the front. This could be partly down to the very light weight of the device. I wouldn't expect this phone to last long with heavy use but time will tell.

The display quality is amazing and the picture remains sharp even in direct sunlight. The form factor is also great. The device is slim and very light making it easy to carry around.

5 out of 5 stars This phone can only be described as ....... exceptional   April 12, 2008

I was looking for a phone to replace my old nokia, I needed to have a fair amount of features on a phone due to the work I do and looking at what was available at the time decided on either this or a samsung G600.

I chose this because:

1. Its incredibly easy to navigate and use
2. Radio and walkman sound quality is excellent
3. PC software is good as well
4 its very light and thin

The only thing that I would say that detracts from this phone slightly is the camera,unless you hold it dead still, the image comes out blurry and there is no flash but apart from that, its probably one of the best phones I've had to date.
