5 out of 5 stars comedy genius   December 7, 2002

Cross the Royle family with Maureen Lipman's jewish grandmother, add a generous dose of garam masala and you get the Kumars at Number 42. This is inspired comedy at it's wierdest best. The succesful immigrant kumars have bulldozed their back garden to add a TV studio extension onto their house for their spoilt son Rajiv who wants his own chat show. The guests are greeted by Rajiv's family and lead into the studio through the house. Judging the looks on the faces of guests, I believe that they are given very little briefing on what to expect on the show. It was hysterical to see Michael Parkinson almost lost for words as Meera Syal's asian grandmother character flirted outrageously with him describing him as "a silver haired mongoose". Dad Ashwin repeatedly comes out with the funniest gaffs as he tries to tell pointless stories with no ending. With A-list guests like Parky, Minnie Driver and Richard E Grant, number 42 is definitely the place to be seen.
